NAATI-Certified Driving Licence Translation

Need your overseas driver licence in English? Upload a clear copy and receive a certified translation by a NAATI-certified translator. Check your state's requirements for driving, car hire or licence conversion before ordering.

  • Certified PDF by email
  • Translator certification details
  • Secure document upload
  • Optional posted copy

What to upload for your licence translation

A complete, readable source helps the translator reproduce your licence details accurately. Upload the relevant sides and pages, not a cropped image of the name alone.

  • Clear colour photos or scans of the front and back, with all edges visible.
  • Any additional pages showing licence categories, restrictions, endorsements or validity information.
  • Readable names, dates, licence numbers and stamps, without glare, shadows or blur.
  • Your preferred English name spelling, matching your passport or application, in the order notes.
  • The state or territory and intended use: driving, a rental booking or a licence-conversion application.

What you receive

A certified English translation of the licence information you supply, including the translator's certification details, delivered as a PDF by email. A printed copy can be requested at checkout.

Keep your original licence

The translation accompanies your overseas licence. It does not replace it, extend its expiry date, issue an Australian licence or grant permission to drive.

Files and copies

Use the secure order page to upload your files and select delivery. If your receiving authority asks for an original translation document or a particular format, check that requirement before placing the order.

3

A NAATI-certified translator prepares your translation. Receive the PDF by email and any posted copy you ordered. Urgent 12-hour delivery is available through the checkout delivery options.

Driving licence translation requirements by state

There is no single checklist for every Australian licence application. Your licence, residency status and intended use affect the requirements. Use these official sources to check the translation provider and document format you need.

Official guidance checked 8 October 2026. Requirements can change; check the linked authority before ordering or lodging documents.

New South Wales

For licence conversion, Transport for NSW accepts translations only from the providers listed by Service NSW. It also requires the original translation document. Do not assume a privately ordered NAATI translation meets this conversion requirement.

Read the NSW licence-conversion checklist

Victoria

VicRoads says a non-English overseas licence or learner permit must be translated by a NAATI translator or the issuing country's consulate in Australia. Use its requirements checker to confirm the steps for your conversion.

Queensland

For an overseas-licence transfer, Queensland requires your overseas licence and a recognised English translation from a NAATI translator if the licence is not in English. Check the original-document and testing requirements as well.

Read Queensland's licence-transfer checklist

Western Australia

WA requires an official translation alongside the original non-English overseas licence for transfer. Its guidance specifies the translator credentials required for NAATI translations dated after 1 January 2018.

Check WA's translation requirements

South Australia

For transfer, SA requires an original translation document. NAATI translations must include the translator's stamp and signature or a NAATI digital stamp with a QR code. Read the full checklist for your circumstances.

Other states, territories and car hire

Check the receiving transport authority's current checklist for the ACT, Northern Territory or Tasmania. For car hire, confirm the rental company's document policy before booking; its requirements may differ from a licence-conversion application.

Driving licence translation FAQs

How much does a NAATI driving licence translation cost?

Pricing starts from $79.50 AUD per licence. The number of licences, language pair, delivery option and any posted copy determine the complete quote. Review the total on the secure order page before payment.

Can I get my licence translation within 12 hours?

Urgent 12-hour delivery is available. Select the delivery option shown at checkout and check the complete price before paying. Ask the team if your source is unclear or you have a particular submission deadline.

Can I use the translation to convert my overseas licence?

Check the receiving state's conversion requirements first. Queensland, Victoria, WA and SA publish requirements for NAATI translations, but NSW conversion uses a specific list of accepted providers. A translation does not replace the other identity, residency or testing requirements.

Should I upload the back of my driving licence?

Yes. Include the front and back and any extra licence pages so the translator can see categories, restrictions, dates and endorsements. Keep every edge visible and avoid glare or cropped text.

Can you translate a photo of my licence?

A clear, complete photo can be used to prepare the translation. The receiving authority may still require you to present your original licence and a particular translation format. Check its submission rules separately.

Is this an International Driving Permit?

No. A certified translation and an International Driving Permit are different documents. Check which documents your destination transport authority and rental company require, and carry your original overseas licence.

Will I receive a digital or printed translation?

You receive a certified PDF by email. A posted copy can be added at checkout. If an authority requires an original translation document, confirm its format requirements before ordering.

What if my name has different English spellings?

Tell us the spelling used in your passport or application in the order notes, along with any alternative spelling. The translation must accurately reflect the source; it cannot change the original licence details.
